two-stroke

somewhere, back in the deep recess of the loveless memory, i can remember adverts for a shop which i think was called hadley custom? they used to run adverts in the bike press back in the '70's and very early ,'80's they had a range of tuning part's for, if i remember correctly, [give me a fucking break, i'm old] four-stroke tuning stuff for the four stroke monsters from back in the day, cb 750's, early zed's and the gs range of suzuki's, their advert's used to boast the tagline, 'help stamp out two-strokes] i wish i could find a copy of the original ad's but i guess it was only me who can remember them, i hated hadley custom with a passion back then, i was a yamaha riding two stroke fan, that's what my heroes rode, from the much maligned, [back in the day] fsie 50, through a 125, rd 250, [or three, ahem] to my beautiful white and red speedblocked rd 400, [i bought it just as everyone else was buying the elsies], here's a nasty two stroke, don't know anything about it, it could be a 250, 400, h1 500 or legendary h2 750, but, who gives a fuck, just a bad bike, hardtail frame, no front brake, ball-milled fork leg's, loving it, especially those expansion chamber's, rrrinngg-aaa-dinnggah, rinnnnngg-aaaahh dinnnngggg......

racing

the grand prix from CSR brno, 1956, three years before yours truly entered this world, franta, cobbled streets, pudding basin helmets, dustbin fairings, massive crowd's lining the streets, no armco, no straw bales, no air catch fences,  just concrete posts ready to maim and hurt any mortal who overcooked it, brilliant, especially with the chezch commentary and the eastern european rock and roll soundtrack......

aermacchi

sunday afternoon disappears, it fades into the ether, into history, tea drinking, eating dark chocolate hobnob's, chatting with the barseman on the phone, catching up with stu, drinking peroni, reading motorcycle news, watching some footy on the telly, oh yeah, we did a bit on the aermacchi too, new torque arm, drilled for lightness, polished up the rear wheel, sprayed the venting mesh with some wilco gold i had left over from painting one of my ma's picture frames, measured up some new spacers for the wheel because the originals were binding on the swingarm and turning the swingarm into a rigid, no suspension, no good on a race bike, sunday....

bike magazine

post shift, saturday morning, home from work after another 0600am start, walk the dog's through the steady drizzle, match this afto, at home to birmingham city, 1720pm kick off, 1720? what the fuck is that all about?, sky tv, that's what it's all about, fitting in with the television schedule, [we don't have a home match, 1500hr's kick-off until the new year, fuck sky, you are killing football] couple of hours to kill before the game, so, i have a brew in the shed, radio 6 on and a general tidy up, i have a big stack of magazines, motorcyle new's, old bike mart, classic racer, sideburn, dice and performance bikes, mojo music magazine, tattooo magazine's and all the other old malarkey i tend to buy on a whim, right, let's be brutal, big mag cull, i load up the recycling with a right load, i stop for another brew and start idly flicking through a copy of 'bike' magazine from 1971, absolute brilliance, excuse the poor photo's......

aermacchi

friday, i love friday's me, the best day of the week, the end of the working week and an early finish too, [except i'm at work tomorrow, third saturday in a row on my shift pattern, one day off a week, i'm getting too old for all this working weekend's bollock's] i ordered a pair of njb racing shock's on tuesday, had two pair's already, [for the mz racer and my sporty], brilliant service from norman, just phone him, give him the length of the shock's, [centre to centre measurement between the mounting bolt's] your weight, the make of bike and he makes them up to suit, custom built gas shock's, non-adjustable, but why would you want to when they are made to suit you? they arrived today, got home and machined up some mounting hardware from bolt's i had in stock, made the paddock stand bobbin's out of some round stock, they are two- piece so we can get the right spacing to mount them off the swingarm to give us clearance, the top mounting bolts are dished and drilled down the centre to save some weight, i love friday's me........

i know what i like [in your wardrobe]

for anyone trying to post comment's on the blog, sorry but the blogger widget is corrupt and i've had to remove it from the sidebar, please feel free to comment, hopefully they will sort it out and we can restore it, anyhoo, here's a mint photo from 'life' magazine that i've been wanting to post for age's but couldn't find anything to write about it.......

unfinished sympathy.....

'blue lines' by massive attack, twenty-one year's old today, happy birthday, absoluteley one of my favourite tune's ever, pure, pure soul music, i love you shara nelson, you make my heart bleed, this is for everyone who has a heart, for everyone who has ever loved, for everyone who has lost someone......

aermacchi

on average, the loveless shed has been turning out one and a half bikes per year, handbuilt in a shed in derbyshire, all done after our day job's, long nights, weekend's, there are more good times than bad, machining a one-off from a bit of scrap stock from the local scrappy, modifying parts to look like they belong, stuff most people wouldn't even notice, chopping out steering lock barrels and welding them up, grinding them flush so you would never know, chopping, filing, hand shaping old, redundant bracketry, just to get that 'look', some people get it, some don't, it's all about hands-on time, you don't need to be the world's best engineer to build a nice bike, just attention to detail, take off more than you put back and keep it tidy, fresh air is good, stainless sidepanels are bad, spend your time hand finishing what you have rather than buying stuff off the interweb, time, that's what all of us have just too little of, dangerous ran up a forty mile round trip to get the rear, twin-leader rear brake plate media blasted to the 'right' finish, i spent my dinner break getting some brand new, spanking. race rubber fitted to the aermacchi rims, you only get out what you put in brothers and sisters......

aermacchi

must admit, i was a little disappointed when dangerous picked up the 'aermacchi owners manual' from sweary mick's. mick had sent off to the USA for it and we were looking forward to having something to guide us on our recommisioning of the little racer, what we received could hardly be described as a 'hefty tome' that's for sure, a mere ten photocopied pages, [including the front and rear covers] and a further four, one sided, very faded copies of the gearbox internals, [with the gem of information 'replace the shims with the correct size', no mention of any measurements or tolerances], oh well, i suppose any information is better than none at all, if anyone has any info on these bikes please free to enlighten us, i have the superb mick walker enthusiasts series book, 'aermacchi harley davidson motorcycles' which, if your appetite has been whetted by reading about the aermacchi is well worth a punt and i've found an old copy of 'classic bike' magazine on ebay that's got an article about the aermacchi metisse so that should be landing in the postbox shortly, oh yeah, just like to say that the loveless engineering guide to building racebikes, choppers, cafe racers and restoring classic bikes will be available soon, it's a very reasonable five hundred pounds, signed by me and dangerous and the price includes postage, in fact the guide is written on the back of the stamp, get it bought, it's a bargain if i say so myself............

aermacchi

some jobs on the project are just too dull to post photo's, so, here's something much more interesting a couple of atmospheric shots of an aermacchi racer and his young lady at what looks like a far, flung, european track, [it's certainly not cadwell park in late september], thanks to ed at the fingymoto blogspot for sharing the great pic's...

aermacchi

sunday, bolting the clip-on's back on, dangerous notices that they are different length's so they need machining to equal length's, machine up the fasteners, there's more than two thread's showing, can't live with that, throw the two 8mm nylock's in the bin and start again, yep, that's better, right length now, [you wouldn't even notice it, but me?, it would keep me awake for hour's], sweary mick has bought an aermacchi race bike manual off the tinterweb, good job really, the mettise forks had 150ml of fluid in them when i drained them, should be 175ml, i top them up with fresh silkolene race oil, the fork caps were painted that horrible 'trent buses' red when we got the bike, quick spin in the lathe reveals why, the chrome is shagged, another spin in the lathe to remove the plating and i clean them off with some thinners and waft them with some clear lacquer, sorted, fork legs wet and dried and finished with solvol, ditto the top and bottom yokes, new unf and unc fasteners, machined up to remove makers stamping and grade marks and well, i guess we've turned the corner, it was never about a concourse job, just a little sympathetic 'massaging' of the basic component's, remember, it's not our bike, there's a fine line between building a bike that's meant to be used properly, to be raced in anger and a bike that's just built to stand in someone's collection because they can afford to do that........
