garden

had a pleasant few hours pottering in the garden this morning, after our disappointing summer this year, the last few days of sunshine has really brought out the blooms, reminds me of one of my ol ma's favourite poems, dorothy frances gurney's often misquoted 'closer to god in a garden, than anywhere else on earth', [it should be 'closer to god's heart in a garden' but, whatever, you get the point] not sure about that myself but it's a nice sentiment....

boxer racer project

finished the modification to the exhausts on the boxer, i reckon it looks ok, too late to start the bike tonight, i don't want to upset the neighbours, [actually i do, they are fucking arseholes] but mr's b has over-ridden me and said 'no', you argue with her, she's five foot three, brunette, green eyed and scottish, i'm not stupid...........

boxer racer project

top photo shows the supertrapp's on my sporty, i'm really pleased with them, they give good performance and are reasonably quiet, they were originally developed by the u.s. forestry commision, they had trouble using generator's to power their cutting equipment in the forest's, basically, spark's coming out of the exhaust and causing fires, the supertrapps used a 'closed end' cap to prevent spark's, some genius recognised that you could use the diffuser rings to increase performance on a motor vehicle by adding or subtracting the diffuser rings to tune the exhaust system to the motor and at the same time, cut down the noise emissions, as the exhaust gases pass through the disc's to atmosphere they create a pressure drop that increases the scavenging effect to allow better, ie, more efficient cylinder filling, adding more discs increases the exhaust outlet and reduces the back pressure, moving the power up the rev-range but increasing the noise level, subtracting the discs causes a wider spread of torque across the rev-range and quieten's down the exhaust noise at the expense of top-end power, so, as you can see, it's all a compromise, i have to run the bike at the meeting's at a maximum of 105 db but, i don't want to compromise performance, made up the adaptor rings and fitted them into the end of the original triumph megga's, luck being on my side, they are exactly the same size as the supertrapp diffuser rings and end caps, so, four disc's to pass the noise test, get the sticker and add another five after scrutineering i reckon.......................................

xs

up at buxton on sunday for a round of the flatrack racing series and i spied this beauty in the pit's, yep, it's a road bike, yamaha's venerable parallel twin has been the basis for many different bikes from road racer's to chopper's and rat bikes to cafe racers, i remember a very quick one being run in the drag's a good few years ago, but, it's given the street-tracker / flatracker treatment that work's best in my opinion, but, what do i know?  not a racer, no headlight so running a daytime mot like me on the sporty, wavy disc's all round sr 500 tank? the paintjob is great, simple black, white panel and red coach stripe and red 'trackmaster' and #3 decals to give it the racer look,  maxxis tyres look the business and the exhaust system is a real work of art, ending in two moto gp style 'orange segment' type megga's, very, very nice, good work fella.........

boxer racer project

after the mad week to get the boxer re-built for the 'festival we have had time to sit back and plan the next step forward, the 650cc engine is just to shake the bike down but won't be good enough to actually race, at mallory the bike was pulling strongly through to and beyond the redline at 7500rpm, the combination of the big amal's, less restrictive exhaust and the weight we cut from the bike combined with some aerodynamic's with the cut down avon fairing worked very well, but, we have to be realistic, the motor is probably putting out a shade over 50 honest british pony's, not enough to compete in the bear's series or the post classic 750 series, [mainly jap four's], with the c.r.m.c, so, after a chat with jim cray, [who built my boxer engine for my bmw cafe racer about twenty years ago], we are going for a short-stroke 750 motor, lot's of work and lot's of cash-money, but, jim reckon's around 80-85bhp, in the meantime, we have a practice day before the big classic meeting at donington park next month and i think we might even just go for broke and enter the last b.h.r meeting at cadwell in september, before that though, we've poked the bike with a stick and found one of the amal carb slides was actually 2mm longer than the other one! no wonder we couldn't sort the carburetion out, dangerous milled the 2mm from the longer slide to even them up, the bike is too noisy with the megga's on too, i've had to rake out all the baffling material as it was strangling the performance and not damping the d.b. level's enough, i've got some spare supertrapp diffuser rings left over from the sporty project so i've ordered up a couple of 'closed end' cap's and we are re-working the megga's to try and quieten them down a bit, the 'action shot's' are of roughing out the adaptor plates to mount the diffuser rings in the end of the megga's........

well, what do you know?  summer finally arrived, two consecuctive dry, warm, sunny day's, up to buxton to check out the latest round of the british flat-track series, the high peak raceway must be one of the most picturesque setting's in england, perched high above the 'highest town in england' and approached on an almost un-made, single track road, park up the sporty and bump into gary inman from 'sideburn' good to catch up, there's a great selection of 'tracker's here, from converted moto-crosser's to wilky's gorgeous triumph, the heat's come thick and fast and there's some very close racing, the circuit is very bumpy and tight and i should imagine very demanding to race on, i spend a couple of hour's wandering around the pit's, watching the racing and enjoying the whole laid back ambience of the meeting, skin out and back across axe edge and into leek, onto the ashbourne road and call in at darley moor to check out the latest round of the club racing championship, it's still busy, the novice race is well subscribed and there's everything out there in a handicap race from 125 stroker's, 675 triumph's and  'blades, check out the tyre wall's at the first chicane, come off here and that's going to hurt you, one thing that both meeting's have in common is that the people competing are doing it for the love of the sport, no cash prizes here, a poxy plastic trophy at best, respect due ladies and gentlemen, keep on keeping on.........................

batman

batman

so, after all the hype and the tragic event's in colorado, [which i only found out about after comment's by whitey and larry] the last in the series, go and see it, [i-max if possible] absolutely stunning, christian bale is an older batman, physically drained from fighting his foe's, bane, played by tom hardy, is a suitable nemesis, the plot twist's and turn's and it's an hour into the film before we see batman as the character we know and love from the previous two films in the trilogy, a very topical script with the breakdown of social order, [basically the have's vs the have not's], very much to the fore, for me the star of the film is anne hathaway, the precocious cat burglar, she get's all the best lines in the film and is very, very cool, go and watch it, don't wait for the dvd, you need to see it at the cinema, total brilliance........

jack's birthday, 21 today, don't know about everyone else, but in the loveless household we rarely sit down together and eat, talk and gather together for a family meal, i guess that's the pressure of modern life, on a normal 'work-day', after walking the dog's and spending a few hour's working on the bikes in the shed i usually get in around 2130 hrs, quick shower and a shave and i'm eating around 2200hrs, up at 0500hrs for a shift, just not enough time, today's jack's birthday, we make that time, in to the city centre, pick up our pre-booked ticket's for batman - 'dark night rises' and into pizza express, couple of glasses of australian shiraz and the camera is being passed back and forth between us, just great to spend time together, it's just so precious, i'm blessed me...........
