ts 250, someone's pride and joy somewhere down the line.....
bank holiday monday, heavy rain today, the dog's look at me in disgust when i suggest a walk and doss down on the sofa ignoring me, i make a brew, dig out mick walker's excellent 'european racing motorcycles' and join the dog's on the sofa, i'm lost in the history of the czechoslovakian jawa's, from the dohc four stroke twins to the 350 v-four two-stroke  that really was a serious threat to the mv ridden by agostini in the hands of the diminutive hands of bill ivy, sadly bill was killed in a crash during practice for the east german grand prix at the sachsenring in 1969, my appetite whetted and i'm on the tinterweb for more details, then i come across this little 250 jawa custom, bloody lovely, remind me to tell you about my mz 250 in a rigid frame bobber project that nearly happened a few years ago........

the sporty has gone to frenchy's for wiring, no way can i get my head around all that elektrickery majick, just doesn't make sense to a simple derbyshire lad like me so i'll leave that side to the clever people, in the meantime i make a cardboard template out of an old cereal box for the seat cover, i'm using close-cell neoprene again like on the mz, it's cheap, durable, easy to shape, [using a craft knife and 280 and 120 grit wet and dry] and looks 'race', the seat unit is back with mad john for a coat of gloss black paint, after all the hand wringing about the fake carbon it's the only way to go..........

brilliant article in this months bike magazine, [july 2011], about mz racing.....

clarky, number six, adam clark, mz racer, cadwell park, july 2010, this is clarky lapping me over the mountain, you can't see me because he's blowing me into the fucking weeds, great photo.

i love my ma-in-law, cath is an ex-glaswegian 'clippie', working as a conductor on the glasgow bus's, rangers fan and lovely lady, she hunt's me down scooter and bike models for my collection, this is my latest, when i first saw it i thought it reminded me of someone, someone cool and handsome, then i got it, it's ben 'fucking' jones, ace tattooist, bike builder extraordinaire and 'the world's most handsome man', shame he's riding a four stroke 'diesel' vespa instead of a rip-snorting px mallossi kitted two-stroke.....

neneh cherry, 'who's looking good today?'..............
early seventies at southgate secondary modern and the young loveless was getting his ear turned by black music, mostly motown and what later came to be known as 'northern soul', uptempo soul music, i was, i suppose what is now known as a suedehead, too young to be part of the original skinhead scene, a time when the skins were growing their hair longer and dressing a little more stylish, the ox-blood doc's and in our area, the to-tecter miners boots, [with exposed steel toe-caps], were being replaced by loafers, [ox-blood usually, 'seg's', metal cappings beaten into the sole which would cause terrible damage to whoever was the recipitent of a right royal kicking, sta-press trousers were replacing the bleached out levi jeans and prince of wales check trousers, red silk. [well, in the market hall in derby, red nylon], pocket handkerchiefs with one or two white buttons, were in our crombie's and even school blazer top pocket's, down at st. mary's youth club a new music was starting to be played, [new to us anyway, 'old hat' to the mod's and skins who came before], ska, blue-beat, the sound of jamaica, our mates at school who's old man came from the west indies delighting in the fact that they had the blue beat sound available in their family collections, things were changing and as we slipped into punk we heard more of the reggae influence, the clash gigs were famous for playing reggae and dub sounds before their gigs, that's why i got that old moonstomping feeling tonight when i was looking through my vinyl and i came across this little gem.......
heinz rosner at a classic bike meeting in germany parading the works 250 mz racer, i've been trying to track down a replica fairing for the next project, rarer than a very rare thing, no luck so far, i really like the way the bottom of the fairing 'bulges' to give clearance for the crankcase mounted carb's, very stylish, shame no one offers a replica, the nearest i can find is a suzuki tr250 item, strange really, degner defected taking all of kaadens secrets to the suzuki factory so i suppose that there would always be an overlap of ideas............

love this classic photo, not sure if it's from an mz sales brochure or advertisment but there's one thing that really intrigues me about it, why has the trophy got one red 'hella' indicator and one amber one?, the bike must have been used on the continent as the mirror is on the left hand bar which would suggest driving on the right hand side of the road, was it some sort of identity marker?

well, i've sat and looked at it for a couple of day's and today i decided i really couldn't live with it, you have to be true to yourself and the easy option was to just leave it as it was, i don't do 'the easy option', i picked at the edge of the 'carbon' wrap and ripped it away, it isn't carbon, it's just a vinyl wrap covering a fibreglass copy, it's not real, it's fake, rip it up and start again.....
silvio grassetti, works mz racer.
prince philip and the lead singer out of aha working on a trophy, respect due lad's....

so, my 'bargain' breaker rear light is faulty, [only illuminates on rear marker mode, no brake light], luckily gary from 'sideburn' is able to identify it as a motrax item and even though they have gone bust, i source one from demon tweek's, me and my mate roy spend a couple of fraught hours carbon wrapping my seat unit, to quote madonna, 'flawless, absoluteley flawless', dead chuffed, get home after my shift and try it on, great, brew on, back in the shed and......it's not right, it is, but it's not, looks real, but it's not, no room for 'fakes' on my bike, i'm no better than the tosser's with rim-tape and carbon tax disc holders, no way i can live with it, it's fake and i don't do fake.......
