thundersprint, darley moor [part two]
a snapshot of my favourite bikes from the thundersprint, well, the ones i managed to get photos of anyway, there were many, many, tasty bikes at darley, unfortunately with the weather being so bad and it throwing the race programme into disaray we couldn't venture too far away from the van in case our sessions or races were called, so. heres the few i managed to catch at the end of the meeting before their owners made a hasty retreat. the 350 manx was lovely, you don't see many about compared to the 'works performance' or 'summerfield' 500 manxes, [i reckon theres more around today than back in the day!]. oily rag condition and not overly restored, perfect. ian webb's 500 honda single is a genuine racetrack refugee, built for the lamented sound of singles race series, rocking some serious race equipment, lockheed brakes, original 'astralite' wheels, a maxton shock and the loudest exhaust i've ever heard on a single, believe me, i was in the holding area behind ian and with the race cam fitted he had to keep blipping the throttle because of the lack of tick-over, deafening, 'you what?' 'pardon me?' ron mauls famous 'helga' was all present and correct and looking sparkly for a new paint job too, got talking to the new owner, he lives in dubai and had come across especially for the meeting, talk about a rude awakening! what you saying about the spondon cbx? when you think about the spindly frame, swingarm and forks of the original it just seems so right to wrap it up in a spondon frame, ohlins r+t forks and mono-block nissin calipers looked the dogs danglies too, the ever present mz's were there, thrashed around the track in the cavalcade and these two machines were being loaded up with the owners camping trip for the journey home. ex bsb support race series xr1200 was a serious piece of kit, harley should have built them like this in the first place, i'm starting to warm to the xr1200, i know they look a big bike compared to a traditional sporty, but i reckon something like this on the road would be a right hoot. the kreidler 50cc racer was like a little jewel, big-up's to the young lad riding it too, he was going really well, class. oh and then theres the bosozoku-stylee honda cx turbo, i'm really not quite sure whats happening here, but, i fucking love it! so refreshing to see something like this after the usual bratstyle/streetracker/cafe-racer/firestone-tyred/pipe-wrapped bollocks clogging up the tinterweb, absolutely barking..............
